Energetic City

 All You Can Consume

The way we deal with energy will shape our cities in the future. Green buildings will not be the focus anymore as synergetic networks will become more important. And the large scale generation of renewable energy will change the landscape around the cities. How will the new energetic cities look, how will they function, what freedom can they provide and what beauty can we expect?

First we need to analyse the scale of energy in our cities. How much energy do we use and where does it go to? How much coal or oil does a city consume? How big is the forest that can absorb the CO2 created by this consumption. How much space do the alternatives need, the wind farms and solar parks? Renewable energies vary in supply and require buffers. Can they become part of the city?

The energetic city can be surrounded by the generation of energy, a new powerful landscape that supplies the city. What kind of new energy fields, mountains and lakes can we imagine? Different models can be imagined as well. Energy generation can mix with the city, be completely distributed between the buildings. Can this lead to a wireless city, where no cables exist and everything is decentralized? Where are the limitations?

Another model is the optimal network. Every energy user is connected, all excess energy is used somewhere else. How to make this energy grid? What will be the optimal mix of program? Does it lead to multi-tasking buildings that provide shelter, generate energy and purify water? Or will we get highly specialised buildings that are connected throughout the city? And will the network grow beyond the city, connecting more and more globally, leaving the idea of autarky completely behind?
